The SIU women’s basketball team dominated the Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards Monday with freshman guard Cartaesha Macklin named Newcomer of the Week and junior guard Teri Oliver named Player of the Week.
According to the Saluki Athletics website, this is the first time SIU has received both MVC weekly awards since Jan. 26, 2006.
Oliver shined Thursday in SIU’s win over Missouri State when she scored 28 points to exceed 1,000 for her Saluki career. She hit an SIU record-tying seven 3-pointers on just eight attempts in the matchup, according to the Saluki Athletics website.
Macklin marked 14 points and a career-best nine assists Thursday, followed by her highlighted first career double-double Saturday against Wichita State. She scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in a near loss to the MVC leaders.
Macklin currently leads the Valley’s newcomers in scoring and assists averaging 16.1 points with 3.9 assists per game, which ranks fourth and third overall in the MVC.
